Decorating newly skimmed walls & ceiling.

You need to put on a mist coat or some recommend two mist coats - that's emulsion thinned with water. The mist coat(s) sink into the new plaster. If you use full-strength it will sit on top and flake off. I'm not a professional but (following advice in this forum) I now always use Dulux...

Extractor fan. Need a more powerful one?

I had this problem. It was solved by installing an in-line extractor fan above the bath where all the steam was originating (the bath is used for showering). I think the make was Vortice and it really does a great job.

New Boiler: do I need new radiators?

Yes, now you mention it, the guy who replaced the boiler in the first property I mentioned also said that. Seems perfectly fair to me. I took the risk, but I guess if someone had Persian carpets all over the place, they might think differently.

New Boiler: do I need new radiators?

Well, I'm not a plumber but when I wanted to replace an old boiler (about 30 yrs old) the plumber told me the same as yours told you. In fact, he went farther and said that if I didn't replace the rads, they might 'explode'. I consulted several other plumbers, inc. British Gas, and no one...

    cleaning limestone fireplace

Have you tried an ordinary eraser - the kind that removes pencil marks on paper? Limestone is an absorbent stone so it's usually recommended that it be sealed when it's installed. You'd certainly do that with a floor and I would have thought it was just as important for a fireplace.

poor result with Unibond Tile on Walls

It's OK, folks. I have (I hope) solved my own problem now. First, I experimented with one tile and the BAL adhesive I'd used for the floor. It stuck and no cracks 24 hours later. Then I went down to my nearest tile retailer (not one of the sheds) and the guy behind the counter slapped down a...

poor result with Unibond Tile on Walls

I've done quite a bit of floor tiling in my time, always successfully but I've just had a complete disaster with Unibond Tile on Walls. I'd done the floor, using BAL, which doesn't require you to prep ply before tiling. There was a bit of boxing in of the pipes, to do, too and as I wanted to...

Thanks, Mikey. You've put my mind at rest. I timed it today and it does take at least two hours.

    Cycle time for Neff dishwasher?

Thanks. I already have the instruction book but I can't find the information I need in there. I'll have another look and maybe send Neff an email.

    Cycle time for Neff dishwasher?

Does anyone know how long a 'normal' programme on a Neff dishwasher should take? I have a Neff integrated model S44E43NOGB and the thing seems to run for hours before finishing. I've had a Neff before and I don't think it took this long. I don't want to ask for a service visit if there's...

    CUTTING CERAMICS

Ah, yes, windows! Trim is ideal for these. If the tiles are white, you could use plastic but if - like me - you don't like the curved profile, aluminium/stainless steel finish looks better and more discreet if you use the flat type.

    CUTTING CERAMICS

I'm not one of the regular experts. I'm not an expert at all, but I have just finished tiling a kitchen and I'm wondering why you have raw tile edges showing? No matter how neatly you cut this edge, it probably always will look like a cut edge. To look finished, I'd suggest you hide the cut...

Real wood floor over bitumen/asphalt floor?

Luci, I'm not an expert but I did once lay a solid wood Junckers floor over a cement base and had no problems. A few points: 1. I don't think you need to get rid of the bitumen. Many old parquet wood floors were laid directly on top of bitumen so the substance itself is not a problem...

    Help on kitchen floor

Well, depending on how bad the surface is, you could try this product: http://www.nomoreply.com/index.htm Unlike marine ply, it's only 6mm thick but I can't find any derogatory comments about it on the tile forums. I was introduced to it by a bathroom fitter who's using it now instead of...

    Tiling behind bath

Well, I can think of one advantage - your bath panel will probably fit as it was designed to. When the bath is fitted before the tiling, it fits (obviously) under the tiles so when the installer comes to fit the panel it's a little too long. He then cuts the panel and depending on his...
