thanks for the clarification Steve, much appreciated if i can ask about minor imperfections and small pits in our finish (not cracks due to poor prep): can we apply another coat of plaster over the whole wall to fill these? they are only about 0.5-1cm, and one layer 'deep'... will a new...

cracks appearing in newly plastered wall - why?

Hi Steve I used Cementone Rendabond PVA which I bought from Homebase. When thinned 5-1 for the sealing coat it really was like water (painted on - perhaps should have rollered?), but since this is our first effort I don't have anything I compare it to. Even when 3 PVA to 1 water it seemed...

cracks appearing in newly plastered wall - why?

Hi I would be very grateful for your help. We plastered the wall under the stairs and in one section small egg shell-like cracks appeared the next morning. The house is old (1750s), but the wall is at a guess Victorian (brick I think, but we did see sandstone like parts where we...

drill bits for wood available in SDS+ format?

hi, i have a Bosch "Blue" power / hammer drill (forget which exact model, but recommended to me on here and VERY happy with it). to avoid fiddling round with a chuck to use "regular" drill bits, i would like to use SDS+ bits instead... are these generally available for wood? the ones...

best cordless driver for £100 or so?

hi, i am looking for a cordless driver with a budget of about £100, but would prefer cheaper rather than more expensive (i know you get what you pay for, but i'm rather short at the moment). i have seen the Bosch GSB18 VE-2-LI recommended in recent threads on here, but that is out of my...

what will disslove / loosen bathroom sealant?

i cannot get at it with a blade - the idiot that installed the cat flap used the sealant between where the flap surround touches the door, which is a large enough area to create a very strong bond. if the silicone eater does not work then i will have to jam a large screw driver to wedge it...

thank you John for the heads up whilst it seems not everyone is a fan of "silicone eater" it is my only option, since brute force will no doubt damage the door cheers, Nick

best all purpose mains-powered drill for £150 or less

the work is likely to be intermittent rather than a big project right now then nothing afterwards, so i guess i'd prefer it to last, but within reason i'm not that fussed. i know dewalt are a "name" and lots swear by them, but there are so many brands and drills to chose from, i just need a...

best all purpose mains-powered drill for £150 or less

hi, I guess there could be lots of choices here but i am on a budget and want a good all-rounder mains-powered drill for c£150, but it would be nice for less. it will be doing general diy that my old (but very good ) cordless bosch doesn't have the "umph" for eg drilling into brickwork...

Ride-on mower: 4 acres to mow, budget £3k max; what to get?

hi there, i have about four acres of land, comprising just over 1/2 acre of lawn, nearly 1 acre of well kept paddock (mowed regularly), and sheep pasture of say 3 acres - the grass has been kept low by their grazing but needs topping; it also has steepish hills and can be a bit uneven in...

Laying new garden path with reclaimed York Stone

...so i don't use sharp sand as the base then? I ask because this is what was recommended to me elsewhere - by a builder who has done some work for me.

Laying new garden path with reclaimed York Stone

Thermo, thanks for your response. i realise i should know - but what's "mot"? and how much should i lay down, assuming i am starting from a base of earth? the current path will have to go - it is raised and i would like the new one to be sunken a little so that mowing either side is...

Laying new garden path with reclaimed York Stone

hello, having moved into a new house in the winter, we have inherited a fairly gruesome garden path - see below: i plan to dig this up and replace it with reclaimed York stone "crazy paving" ie the broke bits, as we couldn't afford regular slabs. the path is approx 2m wide by 30m long. i...
