    Repoint internal sandstone floor

I have a few flagstones in my dining hall requiring repointing. Not sure mortar mix used originally (20 years old). Can someone advise mortar mix and consistency please. Also, do I need to remove all the current pointing or just the loose stuff. Thank, John

    condensing boiler leak

Problem solved. My wife found a brown stain yesterday on the ceiling. Turned out that the leak was in this area. On investigation, a nail had been hammered through the plastic pipe 9 years ago when the house was built but had sealed around the plastic. After 9 years the nail turned to a small...

    condensing boiler leak

Thanks for the reply. This is what I'm finding when I isolate at the manifolds. It is a big volume covering 300M3 so I do still get some contraction as the concrete floor cools down.

    condensing boiler leak

I'm losing pressure in my wet underfloor heating system but have no sign of leakage. However I have noticed that the condensate drain line from the boiler has a flow of around 70 drips per minute and probably fills a pint jug in 5 or 6 hours. Is this normal or could this be the source of the...

Garage concrete floor crumbling at outside edge.

The front of my garage floor on the drive side of the door has started to crumble at places making it very unsightly. I assume its had a thin screed which is now starting to lift. Any ideas the best action to take both from a practical and aesthetic angle? I have a channel drain running along in...

    wet dash walls

My walls are wet dashed white. They are quite clean apart from some areas where roof drains have been leaking slightly. Just moved in, so have fixed the leaks - would now like to clean the walls a bit. Would a power jet at a safe distance do the trick - can you recommend any detergents?

    240V garden lighting in UK

I live in Scotland so will have to check on notification. Thought that was the case with running armoured all the way, but sat in a bistro garden the other week and noticed they had flex ran from the JB at the armoured cable termination to the lights - hence my confusion

    240V garden lighting in UK

What are the current regulations to install some small spotlights in my garden? Do I need to run armoured cable all the way to the fittings which will be fitted to concrete foundations in my rockery, or do I run armoured to a junction box on say, a brick wall then run lengths of aprox 1M flex to...

    Cold double glazed window

I 've recently had UPVC double glazed windows fitted in my new house. I am experiencing a cold draught from one of the windows which has a sill just at neck height when sitting on the sofa right under it. There doesn't seem to be a draught but suspect its the hot air contacting the window...

    Wet underfloor central heating

I've recently moved into a 300M3 house on 2 floors with underfloor heating. The system has separate (external to boiler) circulating pumps which the previous owner ran 24 hours a day. He told me the boiler internal pump was not beefy enough to circulate the water. The boiler itself is a large...

    flagstone floor clean up

I have a flagstone floor in my kitchen which has been sealed with some form of resin. I've just moved in and would like to clean up some areas of the floor which have become a bit marked. Any ideas the best way to do this. Should I remove the resin with some form of chemical, then clean or what?

    Heating system pressure

I have to top up the pressure on my sealed underfloor heating system off a conventional gas boiler. As the pressure increases by around 2 bar when at full temperature, I suspected the expansion vessel. The one internal tp the boiler has a normal bicycle valve which when depressed let out water...

    fitting kitchen

My kitchen floor is flagstones which obviously are not even. Any suggestions how to finish off the plinth when I replace the units? The current plinth has been scribed but looks untidy, and has soaked up the moisture. Thought about leaving a 25 - 50mm gap so there would be a definate break then...
