I need to replace an upright pipe feeding a rad ....however when I drain the system down water is left in the pipe and seems to always trickle back in if removed making it difficult to solder.Any ways round this ???????

Installed a Drayton digistat *2 every thing seemed ok but the stat is idle @ set times, press the + button and away it goes and completes all other functions including set temp rise's or lower ?????????
