    Bath Hot Water shutting off...

Can anyone help please? Veissmann Viotodens 100 Boiler recently serviced, told all OK. Central Heating works fine. However, running hot water into the bath requires the hot tap to be only quarter open. Any stronger flow, and the hot water shuts off and goes cold. Full demand on hot water to...

    Recognise this shelving?????

Hi. Anyone recognise these???? I've got a big bag of aluminium shelving supports of different sizes, plenty to shelve the garage. But no uprights! They are probably at least 40 years old as they came from an older guy. Does anyone recognise the make so I can track down some uprights?

    Rip-off or great value?

Rural Somerset. I am assuming the flue already fitted will be fine, and controls are all there. All we are doing is replacing the boiler unit with the same size.

    Rip-off or great value?

Our boiler recently died. It's a 15kw System boiler (Potterton) fifteen years old, and I want to replace like for like. A local installer has quoted me £2376.00 for: Installation of Worcester Bosch 15 Ri boiler located in existing boiler position. Worcester Greenstar filter and system flush...

Carpet fitting question - Getting Carpet back under Aluminium Threshold Bar

A visit from the plumber resulted in lifted carpets. He tried to put them back, but some haven't gone back under the threshold bars, and are starting to fray. Is there any way I can get these repaired without having to have new carpets? I've attached photos... Thanks in advance.

    Armstead Contract - any good?

Went to the Dulux Decorator Centre in Bristol for some Magnolia Emulsion to do up our cottage. Need a fair bit. They had Armstead Contract Emulsion for £13 for 10 litres. Bit of a deal, but is it any good? Anyone got any views?

CTB/R3 10mm Multifunctional Gas Safety Valve - Help please?

Our local gas stove supplier has just told us that our lovely gas stove, that cost us over £1400, has to be replaced because the gas valve has siezed internally, and they can't get a new one. It's a CTB/R3 10mm Multifunctional Gas Safety Valve. Does anyone know if this is available...

Waterproof paint for Render, or secondary water sealing?

I have a cottage that was rendered c. 1970 and the render was first painted in 1999. I am now beginning to see some damp penetration of the render, so am planning to repair any cracks and then repaint the property. I am not sure whether to use a waterproofing after repainting (Such as...

Problem with Gable End roofing tiles - advice please?

Thanks, guys. I'm learning a lot from this forum. Including the fact that dry plastic verge isn't an option really, not least because the tiles are not cut square (roof is not square, nor is any other bit of the cottage! - 400 years ago they didn't really bother much). I'll get quotes for...

Problem with Gable End roofing tiles - advice please?

I have a problem with rain water running off the roofing tiles and down the south facing gable end rendering, causing damp penetration of the rendering on the gable end of our cottage (see photograph - damp on inside walls equates to dark patches on render). The building was originally built...

    Damp Penetration advice please

Thanks. I'm building up a picture of what remedial work to do. There isnt much point in just doing the render without fixing guttering and sorting out run off from tiles. I will ask about the dry verge strip in the roofing section. Again, thanks.

    Damp Penetration advice please

Yes, that's exactly where the main damp area is forming. I'll have a good look next time it rains hard. I can fix the gutter problem, but if it's rain running off the roof tiles and down the wall BEFORE it reaches the gutter, how do I fix that? In fact, looking at the lay and run of the...

    Damp Penetration advice please

Thanks, Alastair. I have ruled out condensation. I've used the Federation of Masterbuilders website to post a request for more quotes from builders. Assume Silicon not a good idea. As a rank amateur, I'd rather thought it odd. What should render cracks be filled with? More render?

    Damp Penetration advice please

There is a damp problem in my house for which I need advice, please. The building was originally built in 1400s, remodelled, and extended in the 1970s. Some walls are stone and about a foot thick. Others appear to be breeze block. The damp is appearing at the ceiling/wall join of a...

    Corrugated fastener disasters...

I'm making a garden gate, and decided to use corrugated fasteners to join the horizontal bearers to the 45 degree braces. However, on trying to hammer in the fasteners, they all bend, buckle, collapse, or generally make a horrid mess of the join. Is there a trick to using these little...

    worktop jig

Well, after the discussion, I just did it. Hired the jig and the router from the local tool hire store, bought a brand new blade, and set to work. The worktop was a U formation, and the main problem was that the base of the U was not at right angles - one corner was 110 degrees, the other...
