    Site update

Glad everone will have to sign in username. Got very confusing where Anonymous replies to Anonymous repeatedly. Slowed up reading. Hope people stick to black. Much easier to read than multicolour format on a coloured background.

    Pipe Jointing Compound contamination

Never seen this before probably because most people use soldered joints. No problem re health as you are not drinking vast quantities but most unpleasant discovery for you. Looks like amateur at work here with all compression fittings and using handfuls of the stuff at each joint. Bet its the...

Wiring in a new switch unit

Called an intermediate switch. 4 times cost ordinary 2 way switch.

    Additional Socket

Put in a double socket and a fused switch outlet with neon for fan. I find it easier to use convenient switch than stretch up to switch light and fan on. Unlikely whatever you plug in sockets would exceed cable capacity so avoid those restrictive singles!

    Copper Pipe

Softwater dissolves lead which is not healthy for you to consume. Hard water deposits calcium on any surface including inside of lead pipes. I would not bother unless your supply pipe froze up in cold weather. Reckon plumber would replace with blue plastic pipe suitable for drinking water...

    Build a garage

No more flat roofs. They look awful, prone to puddling in centre and leaks. I would remove asbestos sides and convert to car port if you had room to put new garage behind. There is no danger with asbestos cement boards I find. Composition is white asbestos which has same chemical composition...

    Oven/Fuse box - NEW PLEA

Ignition for gas may not be working if it has a fuse near that supplies it. I would look at unit and check wiring to find fuse. Failing that HT transformer may have internally shorted after water provided conductive path.

    builders from hell

"Paid up front". Why? If builder is so short of cash he cannot start job then he would have no resources if job goes wrong. However your best course is to give him a reasonable timetable for progress and if he refuses then its small claims court time to get money back.

    kitchen Wiring

Know exactly what you mean regards new channels. I have just finished cutting nice deep channel for egatube all round kitchen and replastered before fixing up superb Crabtree sockets with sculptured switches and neons. (Pricy but SWMBO loves them!) Perfectly OK to put all in one ring. Only...

    Stairs

Really one of those earth walls? If it is crumbling is that because you have prevented the damp that these walls need by use of impervious paints? No reason with a normal brick wall that you could not support above step by a metal clip or decorative wood edging.

One cold radiator but full of water

If full of water, but no flow, one end of radiator is open but other, the balancing valve, may be turned off completely. Alternatively the flow is blocked elsewhere and you need to follow the piping to see where flow stops.

    earthing

I have overhead supply so only have live and neutral coming into property. Electricty people require this silly 4ft rod connected via 16mm earth cable to consumer unit. Similarly bond water and gas pipes with min. 10mm wire but I use 16mm alround. (There is a pme arangement available by...

    3-way spot light fitting

AS Deano suggests, you will have to rewire sometime. I would suggest you check your sockets are earthed as this is essential! Unfortunately lighting wiring I come across often is two core pvc despite twin and earth being available at time of original wiring. Consequently after a few additions...

    shower unit

If you are thinking of those combined units, I would avoid. If shower trips you would want to know reason. Also keep ELCB separate from MCB as more reliable. MCB protects cable from overload and ELCB protects you from shock. Shower people normally recommend 30mA ELCB now but this would supply...

    Laying paving slabs

I never use cement, just place on sharp sand that has been thumped down. Main reason is that requirements can change and paving may need to be removed and placed elsewhere.

    Copper Pipe

Only bother changing lead pipe for plastic if in softwater area. Good bargaining point in getting price down! Romans could have had copper pipes but it was cheaper to bore out timber.

    tile

Depends how good he is. Do it wrong and you will have a permanent reminder of your mistake. Make sure he will position tiles to be symmetrical in width at both ends of a wall. And think how window will look if tile widths are widely different around it. Are you going to use coloured or white...

    Gas boiler pilot clicks off

Sounds like flame sensor is duff or not in correct position. Should be cheap to replace if required.

    College Problems

Get one of those electronic locks from Maplins that use a soleniod to lock. If you use a magnetic switch you can unlock door just by applying a magnet in the right place! Make sure your friend realises, or unlocking he may inadvertently damage your lock by forcing door open thinking it jammed...

    kitchen Wiring

Not recommended by IEE. Your 2.5mm ring is fused at 30A so 30A could be travelling down this extensive spur in 2.5mm cable rated at 20A in radial circuit. So whilst it is unlikely you would overload wiring it would be better to either have a separate kitchen 30A ring or 20A radial. There are...
