    Neighbour's extractor fan

Well, jj4091. I hope, when I approach my neighbours they will prove a little friendlier and more flexible than you are! Why should you object to a bit of ducting on the side passage-way wall of your house, invisible from the front or the back of the house? Beats me!

    Neighbour's extractor fan

Before we start, I don't want any responses regarding my legal rights, because my neighbour's house was built before mine was built. My neighbour has no obligation to rectify. So - the smells from their culinary activities are spoiling the enjoyment of sitting in our courtyard garden, especially...

    Defective light switch

I tried the WD40 approach, unscrewing and squirting into the mechanism, without success. The alternative you suggest sounds a bit complicated! But thanks anyway.

    Defective light switch

The right-hand button on this three gang dimmer switch isn't working properly. I sometimes have to press it a dozen times or more before it engages. I suspect I'll simply have to replace the unit, but thought I'd post here first to see if there was a way of rectifying the mechanism.

    Thermostat replacement

A bit like Schrödinger's cat. Either or both circuits could be alive or dead at the same time ??

    Thermostat replacement

You've been very helpful indeed, RG! Thank you. Just one more question - are the stats on my downstairs ring main or lighting circuit (for isolation)?

Here's the wiring - black brown and grey. Looks simple!

I took the front cover off and googled JGSTAT2W/B and it seems like it's a wired stat

    Thermostat replacement

I moved into my new house recently to find the downstairs underfloor heating system (gas boiler, Ideal Logic+ System s18) is controlled by four “nightmare” thermostats in lounge, kitchen, hall and utility room. The stats are Speedfit Aura. I've had several attempts to program them, but can't get...

    Thermostat replacement

The stats are Speedfit Aura, if that helps. Thanks for your replies. I'll do a post on the plumbing forum as well to see what they say.

    Thermostat replacement

I moved into my new house recently to find the downstairs underfloor heating temp (gas boiler, not electric) is controlled by four “nightmare” thermostats in lounge, kitchen, hall and utility room. (See photo). I've had several attempts to program them, but can't get my head around setting...

    Price of concrete

Thanks for those thoughts. I'm getting some silly quotes from guys who want to lay the base but add £££££££ for "Materials Cost"!

    Price of concrete

I'm laying a base for a garden cabin and want to lay it on concrete I'll need about 1 m3 of ready mix. What could I expect to pay for this? (Living in South Wales)

    Low joists - Increasing head-room

Yeah, I thought of that, but that's a lot messier, and I'd need to get a builder in to do it.

    Low joists - Increasing head-room

Thanks. The beam is 4x2. Could I shave two inches off do you think? Also I was thinking of bracing the weakened area by bolting on a metal strip. Would this be necessary?

    Low joists - Increasing head-room

My landing has a couple of beams/joists which are a particular headache (literally!) for tall people. I would like to solve this by removing a section as shown in the photos. Would this cause significant structural problems to the house? The beam, as you can see is not load-bearing.

    Mouldings around window

Can anyone advise me the best way to reinstate the mouldings at the base of my window to look like those of my neighbour (left of photo)

    Cleaning brickwork

Can anyone recommend a method of cleaning the brickwork on my house. Please see an example in the attached photo. Thanks.
