Best way to plaster this partition wall?

Should I pull the lats off and plasterboard it, or can I use plasterboard over the lats, or should I just do as the original builder did and plaster the entire wall using the lats? The lats are fairly uneven in places although generally the wall is quite straight.

    Old plaster

Ripped a load of old plaster off a partition wall today, it was practically falling off. Anyhow, the lathes are all exposed, still nailed to the timbers. If this wall were to be plasterboarded, do those lats stay, or get removed? I only ask because they make good firewood :)

Building a small pitch slate roof

How easy is it to build one? I have a flat-roofed extension on my kitchen, which is built outwards from the old wall. There will no doubt be a girder along the ceiling supporting the weight of the back wall, which will stay in. Because so little light gets into the back of my house, I...

    Making a small box

Whats teh best way of making these corners not rounded, but nice and smooth (billiard ball smooth), so that you can hardly feel any grain? I plan to fix the sides together with dowels and glue, would this be ok? The wood is solid english oak.

    Inhibitor?

I have a pretty old towel rad that I installed in my bathroom. It has 3-4 very very tiny pinprick leaks around the brazed joints. I'm inclined to leave it for a few months to see if they seal themselves up, but if they don't, is it ok to add a leak inhibitor to the system, and can anybody...

    Skylights

I fancy making some skylights up for a single storey flat roof extension. The extension takes the place of what was formerly the back wall of the house, which contained a large vertical window and a sloped skylight (the wall stood slightly proud of the 1st storey wall and the skylight joined...

    Gloss paint problem

I've got a tin of white gloss thats been sat around for a year or two, unused. I opened it the other night and found the paint had the consistency of cottage cheese. No amount of shaking and mixing would make it smooth again, but it appears to go onto wood without issue (although its a bit...

    Large shower curtains

I have a large shower curtain rail, about 360cm circumference, that I'm trying to find a shower curtain for. I can only find 180cm curtains. Anyone know where I can get a bigger one? Or am I doomed to suffer 2 curtains?

    Carpet

Right, I've just built a hearth for my cast iron fireplace (and very nice it is too). The trouble is, the hearth is much bigger than the old one, therefore I had to cut the carpet back. There is enough carpet flopping over the top of the hearth to get it trimmed and looking nice, but I don't...

    Capped chimney

How much would it normally cost to have a chimney uncapped? There are 4 flues, 2 are uncapped (1 of which is in use for an open fire). The capped flues don't appear to have any ventilation, and the chimney pots are gone (I would want to replace all 4 flues with early 1900's style chimney pots)

    How to cut t&g?

I have a large pile of solid oak flooring, t&g, which I will be using to refloor my bathroom (directly onto the joists, its easily thick enough). Some of the boards are longer than the room, some are slightly shorter, and others shorter still (I got it all very cheap). Whats the best way...

    loose bricks on chimney breast

I'm installing a working cast iron fireplace in my front room, to replace the non-working decorative bedroom fireplace that somebody so thoughfully installed  The fireplace you see below is the one I'm removing. The one I'm replacing it with is much larger. This is a good...

    rubber draught excluder

Any idea where I can buy the rubber draught excluders for external doors (timber)? The cross-section is a circle, with an upwards pointing arrow on top. The 'arrow' fits into a groove on the edge of the doorframe, so that when the door is closed, it compresses the circular bit between the...

Am I right to laugh at this?

From another forum, so I don't have the link, but it does seem rather heavy-handed. I seem to recall similar legislation regarding double glazing, personally I think they can shove it up their arse, but I'm not ignorant of electrical safety, or common sense. Perhaps its designed for those...

    Underfloor heating?

Excuse my ignorance here :) I have a 2 storey terraced house, circa 1910. I have a 2 feet tall crawlspace under almost all the house. The floors are all floorboards, some tongue and groove, some just planks with a few mm gap. Is it possible to install a water-based underfloor heating...

    Problem with flueless gas fire

Apologies if this is in the wrong area. http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/product/product.jsp?CATID=164180&entryFlag=false&PRODID=7520181&paintCatId= I've had the above fire for about 2.5 years, during which its worked perfectly. I always leave the pilot light running. Today when I turned it...

    Oak flooring

I'm doing my bathroom soon. The floorboards are too badly damaged to leave bare, so I'm pulling them out, and want to replace them with oak flooring. I've seen some flooring in a local yard, about £55 a square yard. Its about 3/4 inch thick, and about the same width as my current boards, so...

    Cast Iron guttering

I'm going to have my bathroom completely stripped out and replaced, with edwardian-style appliances. Its going to be very expensive, what with the period tiling and all, so I'm getting the money from the mortgage provider. I reckon I might as well take care of the guttering on my house, as...

Need help finding an old screw type

Can anybody guide me to a shop that sells these type of screws? Its an original from a keeper (from a neighbour's house). I can't find any screws that have such a large rounded head. The normal rounded head screws from B&Q and such are more of an oval head. I also need some shorter...

    light tube

I'm trying to find information on somethign I've seen on the telly a few times. They're cylindrical tubes, mirrored on the inside, the top pokes through the roof, with a plastic clear dome to stop water getting in, and the bottom looks like one of those halogen flush lights, except much bigger...
