Making a ginger staircase "old" again

I paid a joiner as you struggle to get the ridgity on the newell posts - even the pros do ... unless you completely swap the newell post - i.e. alter the physical construction and support of the stairs. The joiner simply chopped the existing newell as low as possible, drilled large diameter...

tiling to a corner that is tapered

I'm tiling into a corner in my bathroom where the wall is tapered from top to bottom by over an inch - i.e. - there will be an inch more tile at the bottom than at half way up the wall. What is the best way to tackle this problem so it doesn't look a mess? Would you advise (i) doing 90...

Is an earth circuit required on domestic lighting circuit?

so secure spark ... would this be a safer semi permanent bodge while we save up for the rewire and associated decorating costs??? - f'ing nightmare!: do as much of the simple remedial work as I can in the loft and under the upstairs floor - replacing all the 2 core circuits with 1/ 1.5mm t&e...

    Bathroom junctions

They'd sold out of 2.5mm sealed units at B&Q! ... but as the Mrs has decided she wants some swanky lino firm (Amtico or something) to fit the new floor instead of boards I figure a normal JB will be OK if it's not against regs as no water will be getting anywhere near it through the flooring...

    security light fused spur

Guys - crazed DIYer who had my house before put a plug on some 2.5 mm t&e and plugged it in above boards then ran it under the floor to the security light. I want to get rid of this, free up the single bedroom socket and run a permanent cable under the floor to a fused switch then into...

Bog standard 4 entrance brown junction box (lighting) but ..

Spotted something else in the loft (lighting circuit) that I'm not sure about whether it is safe. I presume it is part of the original installation. Please advise if I need to replace with something beefier. Bog standard brown 4 terminal junction box but has 7 1mm 2 core (or there...

Running 2.5 mm t&e under plaster

I need to run 2.5 mm t&e under some new plaster (vertically) and have bought the nail over type of conduit with a flange at each side (i.e. - the stuff with the cross section that looks like a stew bowl). Is this type of conduit OK and to regs for under plaster?

Earth is live on neon screw driver but don\\\'t understand w

ok - so I've invested in a multi meter (just a tenner but I'm assured that it's up to my needs) but want to make sure I use it correctly so if I want to check whether there is earth leakage I stick red on live and black on earth right? and it should read 0V??? or will doing this actually...

    loft light

... guys - as I'm going to be doing a lot of work on the upstairs lights circuit as per plugwash's reco' I was going to "semi permenantly" wire a simple lighting rose up in the loft with 1.0 mm lighting cable to a plug (with 3 amp fuse) and plu it in my loft socket for use when I have the...

    Bathroom junctions

OK electrics genius's - I have another safety poser for you as my electrics on the job education continues. I'm trying to do everything I do myself by the book rather than bodge so please advise. I've taken a socket from the ring into the loft from the bathroom as there was a supply to the...

Is an earth circuit required on domestic lighting circuit?

Interesting ... do any of you spark boffins agree with David P - or would you all suggest rewire asap?

Will CU trip on a lighting circuit for a fault if no earth?

For a lighting circuit without an earth (i.e. - without rewire), will the circuit breaker (is it an RCB or an MCB or something - you'll have to excuse my lack of knowledge!) on the consumer unit trip out if a person came into contact with a live/ switched live on the lighting circuit or would it...

How do I run a new earth for the lighting circuit?

Is all wiring for lighting in normal house usually in loft and under upstairs floor? I realise you can't possibly know without viewing a given property but what is the norm with regard to the lighting circuit - would access to the consumer unit downstairs and under upstairs floor and loft be...

How do I run a new earth for the lighting circuit?

As insoector says I can't tap into the socket earth circuit for the lighting as against regs, I was considering doing this myself but unsure how much work is involved in getting the earth up to the lighting circuit before I start rewiring. Presumably I'll have to start at the consumer unit...
