Which paint to use on previously limewashed joists in cellar

Hi everyone. I have a slightly damp cellar floor/walls, but the joists are pretty dry. The joists have previously been limewashed which is now crumbling off. I intend to scrape clear the joists and paint them. Is it best practise to use normal primer and gloss on them? Thanks in...

    Protecting interior sandstone flagstones

Thanks for your replies. "leave them - they will always look better than treated stone" This is not an option. The stone acts as a sponge. Any liquid spilled on them is sucked up and stains the stone irreparably. Prenticeboyo, which product have you used from...

    Protecting interior sandstone flagstones

Hi everyone I want to protect/stainproof/seal the sandstone flags in my lounge. Can anyone recommend a treatment for this? If possible, I don't want it to change the appearance of the stone, be breathable and good at stainproofing. Thanks in advance Jim

What are these I found loose amongst my bathroom refit bits

I have just refit my bathroom. New combi mixer shower, bath, toilet, sink, the whole lot. Rather worryingly, I found two of these (pictured below) all on their lonesome, amongst all the refit packaging. Does anyone know what they are, and where they need to go...

    Bad radiator location?

Thanks for the prompt replies. I was hoping it would be as simple as that, and there not to be some strange radiator thermodynamics to worry about :-)

    Bad radiator location?

Hi everyone I am moving a radiator and was wondering whether it's new location is a bad idea. It is in an attic bedroom with a sloping ceiling. The ideal location for it is about 1 ft away from the open stairwell going down to lower levels. I am worried about it's capability to heat the...

Using Artex to fill chased channels

Morning all. Not sure which forum this is best for, so I thought I'd start here. Can anyone see anything wrong with using artex to fill chased cable channels (over capped cables of course)? My experience of artex is that 1) I hate it as a decorative coating. however 2) It makes a good...

Fireboard, as good as Aquapanel for water resistance?

By as good, I mean resistance to damp/water ingress. It is in a shower area so I (think I) will be tanking anyway. When I say fireboard, I mean the pink stuff which I think is cement based. Just curious, I have not seen any posts about this on this site. TIA Jim

Setting a level line for a kitchen fit

Thanks for the reply Symptoms. It's pretty wobbly. The base units will be sitting on Yorkshire stone flagstones. I have tried using a laser, but was only holding it up against the wall, its amazing how much the line wobbles! What I may do is build up a unit, put the legs at the mid point...

Setting a level line for a kitchen fit

Hi all, thanks again in advance for any replies, you lot have answered many questions for me in my quest for a habitable house. I have read that the best way to level up kitchen base units is to draw a level datum line across the walls. You then line up the tops of the kitchen units with the...

Bonding and skimming a wall with lots of backgrounds

Thanks so much for the replies. I am.... 1) Very surprised you understood what I meant from my gibberish post! You got it spot on. 2) Smacking myself on the head for not thinking of nailing on a beading ontop of the exisiting one! Then again, there are lots of obvious (with hindsight)...

Bonding and skimming a wall with lots of backgrounds

Thanks for the reply Richard. Sound plaster is greater than 30%, I live next door to a builder who loathes dot and dab with a vengeance. I do agree with him to a certain degree and am enjoying doing things "properly" (I like the feel of solid walls). I'm also enjoying learning the skills of...

Bonding and skimming a wall with lots of backgrounds

Hi everyone Firstly I'd like to say thanks to all the contributors to this forum for their opinions and advice. This and the other diynot forums has given me many hours of reading, and saved me many hours in my DIY hell/heaven. I am currently making good and plastering the walls in a...
