Attaching skirting boards to wall, gap at bottom of plaster

... and create a damp bridge from the floor up the wall. I was advised by my surveyor to *increase* this gap in my '50s house with concrete slab floors, to reduce any wicking effect from the floor up the plaster.

Dimmer switch prevents extractor fan timer from working?

I know this is an old thread but it keeps cropping up on searches for dimmers with undimmed outputs. If that's you, try searching for "switched live" instead of "undimmed". I found some useful pages that way.

    Joining plasterboard corners without skimming

Hi Folks, This thread's really helped me (thanks Richard). I have a similar goal, with the bath area tiled to the ceiling and all other areas mostly untiled. I put up aquapanel (cement-based) around the bath area, and I gather that plaster doesn't bond properly to cementboard. The rest of...

The Pan Connector Connects to the...

Hi all. I'm rebuilding my bathroom. The room has the soil stack in the corner, 110mm coming in at the bottom with a boss below the subfloor with 40mm connector, then another boss with 92.5 deg branch for the 110mm soil pipe, then an adaptor to 82mm, which is the diameter of the vent pipe...

20cm extra on stud wall? or rebuild?

I'm moving one of my internal stud walls into a bedroom by about 20cm (I know... but it will make all the difference to the bathroom that's *just* too small) Here's a diagram, note that the door ("====") isn't moving, so when I move the wall, there will be a gap that needs to be sorted out...

skimming over artex - the "yorkshire" way !

well duh, Artex looks lovely while it's in fashion, but can be a nightmare to get off again... UNLESS you do it over wallpaper! We yorkshire folk have known that for generations!

Moving Gas appliances (fire & boiler)

So here's an update on the situation: I got a CORGI and "MET1" fitter in and his advice was not to bother with a gas fire, go for electric instead. The meter is "on an anaconda" so he has some freedom to move it about. That, and supply and fit a new boiler in the loft and pretty much redo the...

Any idea what is this concrete in my garden?

The concrete stops a couple inches short of the fence, and I don't see anything of interest on the far side -- the neighbor just ripped out her lawn and flowerbeds so it's all just level soil and some loose flagstones for walking over it. Thickness seems to be a couple of inches. Most of...

Any idea what is this concrete in my garden?

Hi All, I've only just started to get into gardening, and I thought I'd start by improving the soil (which you could almost make bricks out of, it's such thick clay). The first bit I started digging, I turned up a large piece of what seems to have been poured concrete. Any idea what it's...

Moving Gas appliances (fire & boiler)

Yep, of course. But if I'm moving the boiler then that can be rolled into the same visit, I hope. By "head height" do you refer to the water supply? Shower is good and powerful so I think that won't be a prob. I have all the rest except for a railing at the loft hole. I'd better fit that...

Moving Gas appliances (fire & boiler)

I have no idea, which is partly why I'm here. I think there's a high chance that the existing meter will qualify as dangerous (its only mounting seems to be the gas supply pipe) so with a bit of luck that'll be covered by some regulation and I won't have to shell out too much. /edit: that...

Moving Gas appliances (fire & boiler)

Thanks for the pointers, and the reminder about supplier and meter. Looking forward to getting this all planned so I can start ripping stuff out and preparing the spaces.

Moving Gas appliances (fire & boiler)

Hi all, As part of some major remodelling in my wee house, I have three gas-related tasks: 1) Move gas meter (currently it hangs in space, suspended by the supply pipe) 2) Move combi boiler to loft from kitchen 3) Move gas fire a few feet along the wall Obviously very little of this I...

    Olive removing tool

Thanks for all the comments, sarky (but constructive) and supportive! Yes, pressed for time (girlfriend and lodger need to do laundry you know) Yes, I'm a noob. Reason for not relocating the "whole lot" is fourfold: 1) the combi boiler is directly above the pic 2) the hot water...

    Olive removing tool

Superstar! I just signed up to thank you for this top tip, which got me out of a bind this evening. I was faced with the red washing-machine hose leaking, but the hose connector was kind of buried in the plaster and you couldn't really get to it. In addition, the cold washing machine feed was...
