Suspension out at the bottom. Track rod disconnect, drive shaft out of box and replace seal. Top up with oil. If everything goes well about 2-3 hours. If one of the ball joints goes wrong, well you get the ides.

Unusual for a leak there on a VW, just double check it is the source and that the air vent on the top of the gearbox is not blocked.

pretty sure its fresh gearbox oil & not grease sprayed round locality, gaitors ok. What would the gearbox vent do if blocked ? would it pressurise & blow out the seal ?

All oil seals last longer than they used to, but from time to time this is what happens....Mursal's method is definitely the way to go, and the seal can be prised out of its housing quite easily.
So long as there's no play in the differential bearings, the job will last for a very long time.
If its a bolted flange coupling, its not always necessary to dismantle the suspension joints.
It'll also introduce new oil into the gearbox too - which is a good thing.
John :)
