"We got a visa, so assumed we were welcome."

FCDO advises against all travel to Iran

FCDO advises against all travel to Iran. If you are a British national already in Iran, either resident or visitor, carefully consider your presence there and the risks you take by staying.

British and British-Iranian dual nationals are at significant risk of arrest, questioning or detention. Having a British passport or connections to the UK can be reason enough for the Iranian authorities to detain you.

I had assumed they entered illegally. But apparently they had visas and an approved itinerary and tour guide. Still, a very stupid thing to do.

On a round the world motorcycle tour. I imagine a bit of planning could have found them taking another route.

The husband and wife entered Iran on New Year’s Eve, 2024, with valid visas, a licensed guide, and a pre-approved itinerary, according to the family. Their plan was to spend just five days crossing the country before continuing east towards Australia.

They travelled through Tabriz, Tehran and Isfahan, with their final planned stop being Kerman on January 4, 2025, but they never arrived. After posting on social media the day before, their phones fell silent and they failed to check into their hotel. Iranian state media announced their arrest on espionage charges almost six weeks later.

FCDO advice against travel to Iran was the same in 2024
