Hi guy's

Can someone tell me why there are some speakers rated as 100v

Are they able to be used on a normal home hifi etc?

100V speakers are for use on commercial/industrial public address systems. Using 100V allows longer, thinner cable to be used without significant power loss and different speakers to be at different volume.

To use 100V speakers you need a 100V compatible amplifier.

Most 100V speakers are not well suited to hi fi music reproduction because the transformers in them saturate.

I would add that if you have found some speakers you like but they only come in a 100V version it is usually relatively simple to bypass the transformers and connect directly to the actual speaker inside. Some even have a switch on the back that will do this.

It has to be said though that 100V Line isn't considered the first choice for sound quality. Hence the speakers aren't the best compared to conventional 8 Ohm jobs.

the could be used for a hifi, but you certainly wouldnt get hifi sound out of them, many are frequency bias towards vocals, and very few have any bottom end at all, they are designed for Public Address applications (think the round speakers in the ceiling of shops)
