What hasn't really been pointed out about the relay is, it's not a good idea to use a standard relay without a diode on the control panels output. Due to back emf the coil produces when switched off. You can get around this by putting a diode backwards across the coil.

Just wandered if i need the relay at all?
will measure the current draw (if i can!) but i cant see it using much if anything - after all the device is just using it to detect a signal.
Can i not just use a transistor?
