We have a 1935 blay house with the original dark varnished wooden fireplace surround. I want to paint it white (don't judge me - it's just so dark) and because it has a lot of carving etc I think it would be a nightmare to sand back. How can I get round this? Someone suggested to me to use a paint that goes over any surface - a shellac based paint.

What would you suggest? And any advice on the best egg shell interior wood would also be great

Thanks

A wipe over with ESP will prime very easily and quickly, use a brush around any intricate bits.
