I need help with painting

I would like to know How can I paint an electric fireplace that has a high gloss finish? What paint do I use? The wood is a dark color with a shine...I'm trying to paint it a light wood color. Please someone help.
 
I've got exactly the same problem, mine is vinier! i've heard about pine paint but am unsure! if you find out please post back and let me know!
