1950's bungalow original fireplace and floorboards

Hi

We are moving in to a 1950's bungalow with an original tiled fireplace, hearth, and mantle (not Victorian type but the sort most people would smash out and remove!)

The room also has floorboards.

Would anyone be able to tell me if it is likely the floorboard run under the hearth, or would the hearth be built on bricks with the floorboards fitted around it.

Reason for asking is we want to replace existing floorboards with reclaimed oak, and if the current boards run under the hearth it will be a pain to remove them as we do not want to remove the fireplace.

The easiest way to find out is to remove a section of board in front of the hearth and have a look through the hole

If properly built - and they usually were in those days - then the hearth should be standing on a solid brick/concrete base.

Hearth deffo WILL be on a `crete base

Bricks hold the heath better, but on the other hand they pretty sandy, when we talk about humidity.
