Our 1930's house has fireplaces that had tiled hearths that were level with the floorboards, most of these tiles are missing or damaged. The fireplaces has also been ripped out and we want to put solid fuel fireplaces back in.

Can we re tile the hearths so they are still level with the floorboards as we would prefer this, or is there new building regs that say they have to be so high off the floor now like for gas/electric fires?

you can retile the hearth area, but the modern regs say that the area of tiles now has to be bigger. The other option is to fit a preformed raised tiled hearth which, because it is raised, will be of a similar size to the original.
