Can anyone help with an intermittent but continuing problem with my sons car. Every so often, the engine will just die whilst driving . Speed seems to be immaterial. If you re-start using the key the car will always start. The problem seems to be worse in wet weather . Has anybody any ideas

Bit confusing for a diesel to be worse in the wet.
Only logical thing it can be is the fuel shut off solenoid on the injector pump, or immobiler problem.

I agree. My next step is to put a lamp or LED across the stop solenoid to monitor the situation. Problem is there's no real information on the immobiliser. Thanks anyway

Does your Escort have the shieled cut out on the pump that is controlled by the immobiliser? If so it might be difficult to connect an LED across it. If it has that pump, there are three wires going to the module on the back of the pump (inaccessible) and two coming from there to the solenoid. You can't get to any of those wires.
