But seriously, Germany have just agreed to change their constitution to allow unlimited spending on defence, instead of intentionally hobbling their military. A lot of people, especially in Russia, are fearful of a fully re-armed Germany. Add to that all the countries now considering building nuclear weapons. We may all end up longing to go back to the cosy comfort of Pax Americana.

How much more can Russia be sanctioned anyway.

Unless the West goes go all in on preventing oil and gas being transported, then I have been reading that there is not much more that the US can do. But stopping oil and gas would cause a massive spike in prices and leave some poorer countries actually short of energy.

A good point. Russia has been sanctioned for years. It doesn't have much of an impact on them. We are still buying their gas and oil.

There are now established routes that avoids sanctions, I believe through the various ‘Stan’ countries, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan (I couldn’t tell you which or where they are on the map to each other)

And Trump is an ally of Russia so I doubt he would actually do sanctions, it’s just headline making rhetoric
