you say you have looped the 2 commons, this is correct, but what about the live feed you havent mentioned it (it should be going to one of the common termianls)

Where do the black wires go? Is the switching single way?
. The blacks have been joined together, and the switch is a single way. Hope this helps. Thanks
.The lives have both been put into L1 on both sides, but nothing into the common. Thanks for your reply

I take it you have two individually switched dimmed lights? Were they like this originally? Do the blacks join together but to nothing else?

There was a 2 gang dimmer switch there originally. On both switch's there are two sets of cables going to them. The common only has a looped wire (red) going between the two switch's. There are two reds going into both l1, one must be a switched live. The neutrals from the two sets of cables have been joined together. Hope this is enough info. Thanks for your time.[/img]

If you are sure that you have 2 supply cables, with L&N, and two load cables with L&N, use your multimeter to identify the permanent lives - these go into the COMs, the other reds into the L1s, the neutrals into choc-block and the earths into the earth terminal on the back box. If the dimmer has a metal face plate put the earths there and run a flylead to the back box.

if you've got two permanent lives you don't need to link the COMs
