i am modernising the sockets and switches in my mother in laws house, haven't came across any propblems until now.
my problem is that she wants a new light switch in the bedroom. it's an old 2 way switch as there is a pull cord above the bed.
the old switch has two L1's with a red and black wire and 2 L2's with a red and black wire. the new switch only has 1 L1, 1 L2 and 1L.
none of the wires have any other sleeves or colours on them to say which is the common etc.
any ideas?

That is possibly a double pole switch, or it could be an intermediate switch.
But I didn't know if there is a pull intermediate switch.

Can you post a photo please?

thanks for the reply, someone(i.e. the mother in law) forgot to tell me that there was another pull switch in the built in wardrobes which wasn't used. so the confusion was why 4 four wires for a 2 way switch. in actual fact i was looking at a 3 way switch. problem solved. thanks anyway.
