Trying to fit new 2 way switch but having little trouble.

I have 2 sets of live, neutral and unmarked (assume unmarked is earth as was unused before).

I have put live into comm, neutral into L2 and taped unmaked up. I have done this on both sides. Downstairs light works but upstairs one does not.

Can anyone tell me where I am going wrong.

Thanks

Blacks are often not neutrals in the backs of a switch, they can be used as switch lives.
How was it connected before? Is the new switch metal? The earths should be sleeved and connected together in a block or in the earth terminal if needed.

The colours of the wires are black, red and unmarked. The unmarked (bare wires) were unused in the old one so I have left them the same but taped them up.

I see that the black are prob switched live (not sure I understand this).

The new fitting is plastic, the old one was a brass fitting with the block made of black plastic ( I can put pics up of you can tell me how).

On the old fitting had 2 common and 4 ac only. there was a black into common on one side and red into ac on the same side. There was also a red wire going from the ac slot to the common slot on the opposite side of the fitting.

On the other side the black went into one ac slot and the red into the other ac slot.[/img]

was the old one a 2 way 2 gang dimmer?
You say there was a loop - this means you will also need a loop on the new switch.
On the new switch you will need the permanent live red into Com and the loop of wire across to the other Com.
The black from this wire to L1 on one of the switches.
The red on the other cable to L1 and black to L2 on the other switch.
Note that the switches are usually set out diagonally so Com at the top corresponds to L1 and L2 at the bottom and for the other switch vice versa.
