Additional aid to certain towns

By a surprising coincidence, the greatest generosity does not fall on the most deprived areas.

The methodology has not yet been explained.

"The chancellor has identified his own Richmond seat as ‘category one’ and relocated his Treasury office to a neighbouring constituency [Darlington], but has labelled places like Barnsley and Sheffield as ‘category two’ — pushing them to the back of the queue for economic support."

"Category one includes Canterbury and Lewes, prosperous commuter towns in south-east England, and Rossendale, seat of former minister Jake Berry, who heads a group of northern Conservative MPs pushing for greater funding for their constituencies.

Labour said that, in total, five cabinet ministers’ constituencies were included in category one, the others being Pembrokeshire, Dumfries and Galloway, and Great Yarmouth. These are represented by Welsh secretary Simon Hart, Scottish secretary Alister Jack and Northern Ireland secretary Brandon Lewis respectively.

Priority two includes Salford, one of the UK’s most deprived cities, and Coventry in the industrial West Midlands."

"The government also faced fresh controversy over the separate Towns Fund for England. It confirmed £1bn in cash for 45 areas. Of these, 40 have a Conservative MP, with many being elected in 2019 as they stormed Labour’s so-called “Red Wall” in the north and midlands. They also included Newark.

The public accounts committee of MPs in November said it was “not convinced by the rationale for selecting some towns and not others”, with ministers’ reasoning “vague and based on sweeping assumptions”. It questioned whether the decisions were politically motivated."

And funnily enough anyone who has grafted and earned a bit more than during the first lockdown will get far less under the extended furlough, whilst the spivs will get their usual handouts for doing nothing!

That's the tories for you!

Those who voted Tory to capture the 'Red Wall' made it clear that they were only 'loaning' their vote to ensure Brexit happened. They also demanded further investments to ensure they stayed 'Blue'. This budget has made a start to achieve that and no doubt more will be seen 'up north' before the next election.
