At the price level you want, I think most people use the energy-saving socket strips intended for use with computers to turn peripherals on/off, but watch the current rating for inductive (motor) loads

Thanks ever so much, very helpfull reply, by the looks of it I'm probably better of just getting a vacuum with the on/off function built in, have got so many hoovers I just didn't want to buy another
