I've got a small area of dirt at the bottom of my outside stairs that was roughly edged in with loose bricks about courses high..
I've taken them down and am digging it out to get rid of some weeds ( something that looks like a thistle and has a bulb for a root? ).
I want to build these bricks back up but a bit further out so that they sit on the slabs that surrounded the area rather than just onto the dirt..

can I do this? I've a few spare bricks to make up the difference in the lengths..

yes you can, just leave some drainage holes in teh brickwork at the bottom and a layer of shingle to allow the water to drain

sorry, should have been more clear..
the slabs stop at the edge of the dirt area which is dirt all the way down to china ( well you know what I mean.. :) ).
I want to build the "wall" on the edge of the slabs to save having to dig a little trench and lay a mini footing.. ( 3 inch deep, 8 inch wide maybe? :) )

thanks..
I take it you're the resident building expert then Thermo?

general builder or do you specialise?

I'd like to broaden my knowledge, can you recomend any courses for things like brick laying etc..
something for a novice.. perhaps not to professional qualifications but a good understanding for a DIYer perhaps?

col, im a landscaper, but with a background in building, have a look at my website should tell you all you need to know!

with regards courses have a look at the local colleges for evening courses. they should be at the level you want, otherwise youre looking at the full time courses that are a few years long. ARe you still out of work?
