I guess this must have been wrong since the house was built / heating system installed!!
Think I need a heating eng to have a look. I spoke to one and he said the return from the cylinder must be the last connection to the boiler. ie no tee off for central heating??

Yes that's correct. It's the last tee to stop reversed circulation when your hw is on. If that is the case it's just a matter of swapping the 2 pipes across.
