3 way dimmer switch

I have a set of lights that are controlled from two switch locations. I am trying to install dimmer at one of the switches. I have a 3-way dimmer with both a dimmer slide and on/off toggle. My problem is.. if I turn the lights off from either location, I am unable to turn them back on from the opposite location. What am I doing wrong?

Although my wiring colors were different than those shown, I was able to "figure out" what the wires were. The logic of the diagrams helped. My switches and dimmer now work properly. Thank you.
