Fire regulations say that a fuel storage tank should be 1800mm away from a non-fire rated building or structure (ie: garden shed). If it is not possible to meet these requirements, a fire rated barrier with at least 30 minutes protection should be provided, extending 300mm higher and wider than each applicable face of the tank.
I want to place a new work shed 1500mm away from a domestic oil tank. The 1300 litre tank is enclosed (to disguise it) by simple weatherboarding walls up to the tank height. I want the shed to have two glass windows in the wall facing the oil tank.
Options seem to be:
A. Rely on the oil tank weatherboarding walls (increased by 300mm) to provide the 30 minute protection but is weatherboarding sufficient?
B. Do something inside the shed. But what should that be, and are glass windows a sufficient firewall?
Any advice would be appreciated.
