i was always under the impression it was 7m from bedroom doors? 3m seems very close?!

No. 7.5m (7 or 7.5? - would need to check) is with a system to BS 5839-1 that each detector has a sphere of influence of 7.5m. So if 7m in a circle around a detector doesn't cover the entire room then an additional detector would be required.
 
That was a screen grab from the aico app. I was wondering because an etension I have just wired today has a bedroom (downstairs) with one door which leads to the lounge, and then an ensuite, which also has a door to a hallway. I have wired for a smoke outside both doors (ie. in the lounge and hallway)
 
A smoke alarm needs to be able to wake you up through a closed door. Would it really be loud enough 7m away?
