500W wall panel heater cable not long enough

Hi everyone,

Hope everyone had a nice Christmas.

I was hoping if you could help me solve my dilemma.

We have very small downstairs cloakroom that has no heating. I've decided and bought this panel heater

The problem is that the cable (1.5 meter) from the heater itself is not long enough to reach a closest double socket (3 meters away) in adjacent room.

Obviously I don't want to use an extension lead.

The way I see it I have two options

1. Spur socket

I would use the below to run spur socket

2. Extend existing flex cable from heater using below

Wrong cable. Spurs off the ring must be in 2.5mm twin and earth.

3. Fit a longer cable to the heater.

you could also run it off the lighting circuit.

I do this with a 300W heater in a similar application. For economy add a timer and/or thermostat.

Old CH stats are often rated at 10A or 15A. Modern ones are usually 3A.

But 3A x 230v = 690w so adequate for your little heater.

There are second-hand programmable stats available on ebay quite cheap. Some of them may need a new stand-by battery, which I have also been dealing with recently.

Although Winston will deny it, you are allowed to put a plug and socket on a lighting circuit, and it is not wrong.

A spurred socket would however be more useful for other purposes, such as the vacuum cleaner, lawnmower, or car battery charger. Assuming there is not a fixed bath or shower in this room.

Option 3 you've suggested is also an option but would have to open up the whole unit. I haven't got it yet so not sure if possible. If so, would i use same flex cable from my original post

You could. But I guess the cable would still not be long enough.

Although Winston will deny it, you are allowed to put a plug and socket on a lighting circuit, and it is not wrong.

I've never denied that. But it is bad practice to put a 13 A or 15 A socket on the lighting circuit.
You could put a 5A on the lighting circuit and change the plug on the heater though.

Bit pointless though. All the other options are far better.

You are right of course as spurs can be bigger than 2.5mm but only an idiot would do so.
