Hi all,

I've got a bit of an interesting dilemma. I've installed a couple of large water butts inside our conservator to act as a thermal store to prevent temperature spikes. They heat up slowly in the day helping to reduce high day time temperatures and then slowly release the stored energy at night to help keep the frosts off. Works great and i hardly need any supplementary heating in the winter to prevent frosts an protect the fruit trees growing in there.
My problem is after very heavy rain the overflow (a 40mm tank connector and waste pipe) I've fitted can't keep up with the 68mm gutter down pipe feeding into the water butts. I wanted to either fit a 68mm pipe as an overflow but i can't seem to find a 68mm tank connector, or alternatively i could use 2x 50mm tank connectors side by side and then join them into a 68mm gutter down pipe that goes under the concrete floor into the soakaway.

Does anyone know where i can get adapters to join 50mm waste pipe to 68mm down pipe (something you're not suppose to do under normal circumstances but i hardly call this a normal setup). I thought of maybe large scale fishponds?

I'm not an expert on this subject but I think you might have trouble purchasing a waste to downpipe connector because as you say, they should not be mixed.

Is the downpipe round or square?

A pic would help :)

Thanks Foxhole but i think that only fits onto to the mniline 50mm guttering as the internal diameter is 45 whereas 2"(50mm) waste pipe has an internal diameter of 50mm. I might give the guy a ring though and double check, but like i thought as it's technically illigal to run a 50mm waste pipe into a 68mm rainwater pipe i don't think anyone going to make such an adapter. I might try and see if they do a flexible one with 2 jubilie clips.

Hello.

I found your post when looking for 50mm tank connectors myself.

I have 2 water butts with input direct from the downpipe which also overflow faster than i can use the water in heavy rain!

I have found 2 options:

1)
Mcalpine 2" fittings (white)
tank connector code Z11M http://www.mcalpineplumbing.com/2-tank-connector.html

There are 2 flexihoses that you may need:

flexcon 7 http://www.mcalpineplumbing.com/2-flexible-fitting-universal.html eg connecting 2 water butts together

flexcon 8 http://www.mcalpineplumbing.com/2-flexible-fitting-universal-1655.html eg for connecting last water butt into whatever drain outlet

2) pond fittings! This is what i have just ordered - so hope it works!

Seems the cheaper option, is black (so matches my guttering/downpipe) AND if it can cope with ponds pumping water at pressure, it must be able to cope with rain water!!
(there are plenty of other pond accessory suppliers - you may even have a shop nearby).

thanks nicnac i've now got 2 50mm tank connectors running into a 68mm down pipe tee branch and just a bit of gaffer tap to prevent any splashes coming out works a treat even in the massive storms of late.
