Hi. Is there a limit to the size of the loft hatch you can have?

also, I currently have 2x4 joists and would like to add some bigger ones, would these run parallel to the existing ones?

lastly, has anyone come across any websites that go through converting a loft?

thanks - h

Remember, never cut though any timbers supporting the roof to enlarge the hatch space. The fitting of loft ladder requires reasonable DIY skills and may need carpentry skills to modify the loft hatch/door.Also seek professional advice if you are unsure about cutting any of the joists.

The width of a loft hatch is usually the distance between rafters, the length could be a little longer to give easier access with steps/ladder
If the existing rafters are not strong enough there would be no point in fitting new ones across them, they would need to be parallel.
The question is? could you get them in the loft and could they be supported on load bearing walls at each end
Converting lofts in order to make extra living room is not a job for DIY
If it is just for storage of light items, then a hatch and some floor boarding to spread the load will suffice
