Like most people in older houses my loft hatch is ridiculously small and I would like to put a larger hatch/ladder in place of the smaller one currently there. My question is regarding the joists on which I will be attaching the new loft hatch. I have 4x2 joists at present, the loft hatch/ladder I want put up there weighs approx 25kg. Would the current joists be sufficiently strong to take this or would I need to sister additional 4x2s onto the existing 2 joists on which I will attach my new loft hatch. Not a difficult job but actually getting two 4.2m joists into the loft area will be a problem. I assume the strength of any additional joists would be wekened if I attached two 2.1m joists onto the existing joists.
