I currently have an electric shower that has never performed correctly. Sometimes you get an ice cold trickle, sometimes scalding hot and then cuts out. I've been advised I need a pump and thermostatic shower and have been advised to buy a negative shower pump. However when looking on line as I wasn't sure what the different was and read that negative shower pumps are for water tanks level or below shower head. Our cold water tank is above the shower and the hot water tank is level with. Could someone give me some advice please.

They have said they don't go on line so can't shop around so hence why I am looking into it as they have quoted £400 for negative pump, £205 for the shower, which I have found both cheaper.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

negative head is also used when the height of the cold tank is not far enough above the shower to activate positive head pump, If the height is only a couple of mtrs then go for negative, Price for pump seems a bit high but it depends on make/model, if you can get cheaper then do and get plumbers to fit, shower price seems low so i'm assuming a cheap make, I would go for Aqualisa

That would make sense then as it is direct above and probably only a few meters above. The shower was Triton.

others may disagree but i would NEVER fit a Triton they are crap (sorry) but you get what you pay for.

Up & over pipes to the shower head also have the same effect; if the pipe work goes any closer than around 600mm to the bottom of the CWS tank you could potentially be in a negative head situation. The location of the pump (eg in the loft) will also have the same effect.

If the prices they are quoting you are just for supply of the pump then it is expensive. What size & make did they quote? What size have they told you to buy other than it should be a negative head?

Difficult to advise anything else without a lot more detail but unless the pipe system is correctly designed & the pump correctly installed, it won’t work properly, you’ll have nothing but grief with it & it may well suffer premature failure & the manufacturer may not honour the warranty.

They didn't advise what make it was but said their supplier only had one available, so I went on Screwfix and found many. Any advice on a good one, it's only for one shower unit?

But what size pump did they tell you to get? 1.5 Bar 2.0, 2.5 -- ? Screwfix have nothing I would personally recommend buying in negative head; this is the one I would go for:

or better quality;
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Stuart-Turner..._Bathroom_Shower_Units_PP&hash=item45f4667d83
or for a larger pump;

or better quality;

Please appreciate my advice is based on the minimal information you have given & knowing relatively little about your system, I take no responsibility if it’s not suitable in any way.
