Hi, long time lurker, first time poster here. I use the advice on DIYnot regularly, and most of the time the advice I'm after has already been covered but i cant seem to find the answer to this query. Currently in the process of adding a porch to the house. There is some debate over how to do the roof abutment. Well, to be fair, there's no debate as I'm absolutely baffled by it. I've got some ideas which revolve around custom fabricated lead soakers and hidden gutters etc but wanted to put it out there and see if anyone can help. I've posted a pic of the abutment so you can get an idea of what I'm trying to do but its a blank canvas at the moment. Many thanks in advance.

Apologies, I should have mentioned that. Roof covering will be Tiles. Specifically the Marley "Modern" tile which is flat.

OP,
The leadwork required might be beyond your skills ie. the two short, horizontal abutments will work best as Back Gutters just like the back gutters on a chimney stack.
Why not search my previous posts on back gutters?

We would just get some lead specials made up. The abutment bits at the bottom will likely need flattening out, like you would with a chimney back gutter tray.

Hi. Thanks for your responses. The "back gutter" is exactly the type of thing I had in mind but i didn't know what they were called to be able to do the research. As you have all pointed out and as I suspected I would have to have some lead work made up so I think its over to a specialist but at least I can try and convey what I'm after and understand the ins and outs of it. Thanks all.

@AliC123 Just out of interest, where abouts are you Alec. I ask because only recently I undertook some bench bound lead burning for a friend in need. That helped him out and kept my hand in with an old skill that is almost dead theses day.

OP,
There's more to it than having a back gutter made up.
The prep involves a bit of carpentry below the back gutter position and correct adjustment of the roofing felt.
You prep before any battens or tiles are fixed.

Hi Scally, we're North West England. Trying to find someone who can weld lead may be an issue. Although a cursory google search and there are firms that can make parts up from drawings so, although not ideal, that may be an option.

Ree, appreciate the heads up. I'll do my research, carpentry shouldn't be an issue for me. But I do want to be sure its all correct, I don't fancy having to do it twice.

Ah, NW is too far up for me to even consider helping out, but some plumbers still deploy the oxy acetylene torch. Ask around in builders' merchants as they know all their local traders.

It's actually better to construct a back gutter whilst mocking up the tile batten, so that you can gauge the run-off heights and falls etc. All this prior to fitting the membrane etc.

We always have a few short lengths of tile batten to hand along with a few tiles, screws etc when we are doing any pre-membrane detailing.

OP,
Lead burning and lead bossing are common skills for many plumbers - unless its changed they were both taught & tested on the Plumbing C&G's craft cert?
For your back gutter you take the dimensions requested & have it made up & delivered.
