Acrylic based paint or standard emulsion on old plaster

Moving into a top floor flat in an old building, georgian or early victorian. Effectively rooms in the roof. The walls are curved following the roof line, with dormer windows.

I suspect the ceiling plaster and internal plaster on outside wall is quite old.

If I use an an acrylic based paint on old plaster will this cause problems as it is very water resistant?

Would it be better to use something breathable?

Any tips appreciated.

If the existing paint is fine then use more of that.

If it is distemper, to test rub with a damp cloth. If nothing happens then it is plain old (acrylic) matt emulsion.

Matt emulsion is slightly breathable, whereas silk is less so.

I was thinking of using something like Homebase duracoat, eg in the kitchen area, as it is hard wearing and wipeable.

I just dont want to 'upset' the plasterwork or find the paint peeling off the ceiling
