Adding a new socket to an existing ring

Hi All,

I am a homeowner and am considering adding a new single gang socket in my kitchen.

To do this, I am considering adding the new single gang socket to an existing single gang socket which is wired into the existing kitchen ring. The new socket would be a spur off of the socket and would therefore not form part of the ring.

As a homeowner, am I permitted to undertake this work myself?

Secondly, if I wanted to, could the new socket be a double gang socket?

Many thanks

Paul

Thanks for the prompt response. I am based in England yes. I was worried more than anything about the location being in my kitchen.

Kitchens are no longer a special location.
My wife has a different view, however, but that is not anything to do with electrical works!

AIUI kitchens were never a special location in BS7671, but were nevertheless given special treatment in the original "part P" notification rules for England and Wales.

For England this is no longer the case since the rules were revised, but I belive it is still the case in Wales.

Correct, nor were/are they in The Building Regulations.

Yes, they were mentioned specifically in Schedule 4; notification rules are nothing to do with Part P.

Correct. Schedule 4 still applies in Wales.
