Adding a plug to a lamp

I have just bought a bathroom light which according to instructions should be wired into the mains. I actually want it in another room, and because I rent my flat it isn't possible to wire it into the mains witout causing damage to the walls. Is it safe for me to attach a plug and plug it into a socket instead?

What sort of light fitting are we talking about here ?

Any chance of a picture of it ?

Light's can be fitted with a 3a fuse in a plugtop but the light might need to be fixed and insulated to make it safe to use. Without seeing the type of fitting it's hard to say, I hope this makes some sense.

from an electrical point of view connecting it to a 3A fused plug is fine.

Make sure that the flex is restrained somehow. If the fitting doesn't provide any cord grip already a compression gland is the best way if you can find enough space on the fitting to fit one, failing that make a hole just big enough for the flex and tie a knot in it inside the fitting.

also if the light is intended to be screwed to the wall and you are not doing so make sure this doesn't comprimise the safety of the fitting (often the backs of wall mount fittings are not properly enclosed like the fronts are).
