This may be a simple solution (well I am a woman!), but knowing that you should have rcd protection on ground floor sockets, if you wanted to add a simple spur to a ground floor ring that hasn't got an rcd, could you simply not replace the MCB in the counsumer unit for for a RCBO

Provided that you can get a suitable RCBO for your CU, then yes, but there is no saying that one will necessaraly available, or even if it is, that it'll be cheap

Another option would be a separate RCD placed after the MCB in a suitable enclosure

RCBOs are great

you can also buy RCD sockets and RCD FCUs, but they work out expensive if you need more than one.

Are you thinking of it in your own house? What sort of consumer unit have you got?

Yes, its my own house I am thinking about and its a Proteus CU. The house was re-wired about 10 years ago.

Thanks John, £68 sounds a lot. I would have thought I could get a whole new consumer unit for that. I will look at some of the other options mentioned thank you.

£35 is a more typical "actual" price for most brands.

some list prices are inflated so they can be discounted by the retailer to make you think you're getting a bargain

Carol, would you be able to post a photo of your CU?

Do you know approximatly when it was installed?

You can only get proteus RCBOs for the newer range of proteus CUs.

They are not available for the older models
