Hi

My husband is installing a whirlpool bathtub which has four jaccuzi jets (it was a birthday gift for me).

The plumbing is all done by him but I insisted on him getting in a qualified electrician to wire up the pump.

My question is what to expect from the electrician? We have a fairly new Consumer Unit which has RCD protection so if the electrician says take power off the upstairs ring spur directly is that sufficent?

Or does a new line (with a seperate enclosed RCD) is required?

I want to ask two sparkys to quote on it but before I do that I want to make sure I know what to insist on!!

Thank you all

Xxx

Hi, do you know the power rating of the jacuzzi bath? In W watts or A amps? All depends on that if it can be spurred off the ring or needs a new supply. If its just a pump and no heating elements then chances are would be ok spurred off the ring with a switched fused connection unit. Must also be on RCD. Which by sounds of it your fuse board already has RCD protection so that's ok.

As above. It all depends on the power requirements of the tub.
If your husband really loves you it will be a meaty one, so it will need a new circuit run from the fuseboard, so a new MCB there on the RCD side of the board.
Then a cable run to the tub location - the cable type will depend on where its located. It may need to be armour plated cable.
Also a double pole isolator switch at the tub end.

Just get three quotes. make sure the sparkies are "Part P" registered as this is notifiable work.
There's a list here
