Complete novice but on a budget
…just bought a house and seemingly the previous owners loved black. Nearly every ounce of wood in the house (I.e. skirting, doors, staircase spindles etc) has been painted in what looks black satinwood. The rooms that have been left have yellowing gloss and by looks of the black finish, I doubt they prepped the gloss before painting.
I have had a decorator to look and he’s told me it’s going to be a nightmare to get back to white. He said a light key if it doesn’t sand well, 3 layers of crown trade undercoat and then an oil based satinwood on top or I’d never get rid of the black. I was hoping to go water based but he thinks I’d have no chance of covering the black.
My questions are:
A) how much of a nightmare is it going to be to sand the black satinwood back if it’s not been applied to a prepped gloss surface?
B) if I used Johnstone Aqua Guard Primer and Johnstone Aqua guard wb satin, am I just wasting time and money and should I just go for an oil based satinwood for coverage?
C) in terms of using a primer/undercoat, will something like Crown Trade Undercoat be enough as a bonding agent or should I still go a primer as well like Zinsser or Johnstone Aqua Guard?
D) Finally he told me that because the doors have a wood grain texture, any keying/sanding will basically ruin them so I’d be better off getting new doors - which I haven’t budgeted for. I’m already considering replacing staircase spindles as they’re also black and from his reaction, getting back to white is going to take a lot of prep time and generally still not give an amazing finish - which I can totally see what he means.
Thoroughly deflated and thinking this sounds a nightmare but as a novice would really appreciate any advice as I don’t want to do something and find in a year I’m surrounded by flaking wood work. Am going to get decorator for hall as it’s huge but thinking even if can tackle some of smaller rooms myself it’ll keep the budget down.
