They had an expert advising on how to avoid damaging bursts while you're away (in response to the Northern Irelend chaos). He said that you should leave the heating on at about 10 degrees at the room thermostat and turn off the main stop cock. The heating will probably prevent bursts, but the closed stop cock will stop major damage if the worst happens. Is that good advice?

Good advice unless you have a condensing boiler and it remains working.
Personally I wouldn't leave any modern boiler at this time of year and guarantee it to still be working when I got back.
Only reliable way is the drain the system, or have a couple of electric fires to keep the frost out.
