Advice needed on bathroom plastering

Just wondering if any of you can offer some advice

Currently renovating our old bathroom. The current ceiling is in quite good nick, but it has boarded with standard plasterboard (at least 30 years ago). Then covered in horrible thick vinyl paper and painted. There doesn't seem to be any damp on the board when looking from above and the whole ceiling is quite stable.

I am removing the old wallpaper and planning to fill any small holes, mist coat and then use thick bathroom paint. Should this be adequate for moisture protection.

Also need to re-board a couple of walls to hide the pipes etc - should I board with MR board, bond-it, then skim. Any "wet" areas are going to be tiled, so how essential is MR board if I am planning to skim it anyway???

I would advise you only use MR board in a bath/shower room, weather skimming or not. Your better off not skimming where your going to tile; the skim reduces adhesion & the weight of tiles you can use. MR board must be primed http://www.british-gypsum.com/produ...le_plaster_bonding_agents/thistlebond-it.aspx before skimming due to water repellent additives; don’t use PVA.

Plaster & plaster board are absorbent & even water proof adhesive & grout is only water proof in the sense it wont disintegrate when wet; unless expensive epoxy products are used, they are still absorbent. Plasterboard will eventually disintegrate if it gets wet, even MR. It’s better to use a waterproof tile backer board in wet areas but plasterboard should always be tanked or you could end up regretting it.
