Advice needed urgently-Scottish Gas fitters are on their way

on some oil fired rayburns iv worked with. when i rang technical they said it was a no no. to run the oven without a wet system.

What is your problem? As owners of a 4 bed detached, your parents don't sound particularly needy, and still they get a £4000 hand out funded by the taxpayer.
If you are that worried about them being without heating, pay for a top notch breakdown cover for them, and stop whinging.

In response to the ignorance and stupidity shown by the above poster, could I point out that my parents, between them , have paid income tax for
125 years. Without a break.
Living in a large house, (bought decades ago, after earlier decades of saving and large motgage payments) does not automatically make a person wealthy. Your igonrance and predjudice, Bengasman, is matched by your bitterness.

You've not had many helpful reponses, but that isn't unusual here

First off, if the scots guys are the same as the english ones, there is a fair chance of some dodgy work in, terms of visuals.

NO, the water delivery won't be as good, but in theory should be unlimited.

Was the time scale between the "planning" and start date really only 2 days. That seems a little bizzare? Did they have any input into the proposed location? (probably not, as it will be done to suit the fitters)

I am not experienced in solid fuel, but believe thet the Aga can be drained BUT NOT CAPPED, and be used dry as an oven / space heater (but I am prepared to be corrected)

The new sytem will be more "efficient", but not neccesarily as "effective"

How old are your parents, and do they really want this improvement. do they understand the implications? Do they knpow what rooms will be afected, and what are the arrangements for einstatement?

Get on the phone and ask to see the rep or advisor and express your concerns, as the fitters will be understandably upset if you start sking questions when they arrive, as they are normally in and out in one day, so time is precious.

Is the shower suitable for a combi system? Did the advisor check?

Personally, if they are warealthy, and the 4K is of little consequence, I would cancel the freebie and engage a recomended installer, who should take more care than the current ones may. (I am sure there are some good warmfront installers, but to date I haven't seen any evidence of that}
He said gas fired aga no prob in draining off the water boiler and leaving it in situ obviously it should not be capped (ex employed aga engineer).

Sometimes something that's free is not always worth a lot.

The attitude, diligence and skill of the installers is what count's I've seen good bad and indifferent warmfront installs.

If they go for it I hope it turns out well for them.

Scottish government scheme is not the same as warm front......

Maybe not, ( and I did say "If they are the same etc), but the basic problem will be there. Customers feel disinclined to complain about shody work because they percieve it as "free" work.

Waldo (OP), you.ve gone very quiet. ARE YOU STILL THERE?.

Have the fitters arrived?

Sorry,
Got put off visiting here by some of the geniuses who contribute.
Apologies to those of you who have been helpful.
They cancelled the fitters. Didn't go down well. "We have targets to meet you know!"
A system which is free and doesn't meet their needs is no use. Asking around it seems the system provided is a one-size-fits-all, because "a combi is more efficient than a conventional boiler". Potterton 28kw.

However it seems that a combi can be set up just to provide hot water to one tap (there's a sink underneath the boiler location) plus the usual C/H set up.
Their plan is to ask to keep their existing hot water system (tank, AGA and electric immersion heater) arrangement as is, and just get a more efficient boiler unde rthe scheme.
They may fit solar H/W panels at some point in the future. A new surveyor is coming out next week to see if they can get what they want.

Thank you for your help. It is appreciated. I will not visit this site again unfortunately. I've used it twice and both times have had some pretty negative, unhelpful comments that are a drag.

You should take a positive attitude to all the helpful advice that you have received and continue to take advantage of all the free help.

Its like saying I am not going out walking again because I went yesterday and it rained and I got wet!

I think it disgusting the way some on here flout there 'expertise'/opinions , don't be put off waldo , good luck.

Here's hoping you got something out of this thread. I know it can sometimes be difficult to ignore the Waldos (sic!) who are jealous if anyone except themselves gets anything for free. It does sound to me, as a non-expert on your type of system, like there were a lot potential problems that the installers weren't interested in addressing. I wouldn't consider it good value for money for someone to break my heating and hot water systems, even for free ;) Shame really. With just a little thought there might have been ways to make it work properly.

a decent combi will easily supply two bathrooms, i would insist on a 28kw minimum. The combi will be more efficient than the existing system, only thing to remember is that whilst the hot water is running the heating is off. Good idea to let the washing machine do the washing when you are out, so no heat lost when you are in. Bath may be slower to fill, but you will have no problems with bacteria build up in the header tank, ball valve failures/overflow problems, etc.

this thread suffered from contributions based on little to no understanding of the Scottish government central heating scheme.
