Hi all,

Removed the wallpaper from a bedroom today, wanting to keep the original plaster and just paint rather than paper over again.

Upon removal of the wall paper around the windows and the door frame there are what looks like fairly substantial cracks in the plaster. My plan is to rake these cracks out, and assuming there isn’t any further cracking in the brickwork beneath am I ok to just fill, finish and paint? How likely is it that these cracks are substantial also, the house was built in the 1960s.

Have attached pictures if it works out.

Any help appreciated.

It looks like just minor plaster cracking, from what I can see in the photos. Rake out and fill. Always worth using lining paper, if you intend painting, for a better finish. It's cheap enough.

Hiya, I'm just a DIYer but it looks from that first photo like the crack leads into a slightly bigger missing bit that is about 3mm deep? If so, and it looks like the depth of the cracks is also about 2-3mm I'd guess it's just the finishing plaster too. Like you, if it were me I'd just take out a couple of spots about 10p size in maybe 3 places to see what's underneath and if it looks sound just fill and finish. Do you know what's underneath the plaster skim?
