Advice Please for Pine junior bed

Hi, I've bought pine junior bed but its seen better days its got lovely engraved patterns so its such a shame to give up on it.

Please could anyone give me some advice on how i can remove the marks (which i believe some are bite marks or they certainly look that way)

Although I've never done anything like this before i know the basics on sanding but I'm not sure how to finish it off re-Varnish? Wax? I need something thats safe with children also.

Before you go for a complete sand down try using a beeswax applied to the surface with a fine grade wire wool. This can often disguise marks and is safe for kids.
