finishing pine doors - wax over varnish?

Hello

I bought some basic interior pine doors, and I've applied one coat of antique pine water-based varnish on them...however the colour is a little orange and the finish not great.... any tips on what would produce the best finish? would applying a coat of coloured wax (e.g. rustic pine wax) on top of the varnish produce a smoother nicer finish?

Pine has a natural orange tinge.
Light oak give a better colour, water based stuff will raise the grain and make the door feel rough, 000 wire wool to smooth it off.

trouble is with using wire wool to smooth it rides over the roughness not flattens it. Abrasive paper ie 600grit is better followed by fine wire wool then wax. Some people use the wirewool with the wax - both is ok...

test it first on the bottom door rail near the floor...
