I am refurbishing my house and have replaced door standards, skirting, architrave etc all with pine. What is the best finish for the wood - I don't want to apply anything that will stain it darker.

I have seen either varnish, wax, or oil can be applied but don't know which will look best when complete?

Hi Douglas,

If you're not looking to alter the colour of the timber (no more than simply wetting the surface with a damp cloth) then I'd recommend a waterbased coating something like Aquacoat SP (Matt, Satin or Gloss). It's a waterbased product that makes it very easy to use and is far more durable than it's wax or oil counterparts.

Please come back with any other questions.
